About ICSA

        As a world-class research institute at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), the Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications (ICSA) plays an active role in responding to the international academic trends and national strategies. The institute is distinctively characterized by its internalization, interdisciplinarity and the combination of production, teaching and research with a full commitment to the tight integration of technology and humanities while paying equal attention to basic and applied research.

        With the construction and application of corpora and databases as basis for building multi-language parallel corpora to conduct relevant theoretical and empirical studies in a diversity of disciplines ranging from linguistics, translation studies, literary studies, social sciences, language intelligence, and foreign language and literature studies in digital humanities, we are committed to training excellent talents to satisfy the growing needs of national development and to respond to the cutting edge international scholarships.

        At present we have 8 full-time researchers,  4 postdoctoral researcher,  1 engineer, 1 administrator, and another 1 prospective full-time researchers. Mona Baker is our visiting professor, and Professor Mao Wenwei, Professor Shi Jianjun, Professor Zhang Jidong, Professor Tan Yesheng, and Professor Hu Jiasheng are our adjunct professors.

        We are also honored to have the following professor as our consultants: Professor Mark Liberman (University of Pennsylvania), Professor Mona Baker (University of Manchester), Professor Chai Mingjiong (Shanghai International Studies University), Professor Feng Qinghua (Shanghai International Studies University), Professor Huang Juren (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), Professor Huang Youyi (China International Publishing Group), Professor Li Yuming (Beijing Language and Culture University), Professor Liu Jianjun (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Professor Nie Zhenzhao (Zhejiang University), Professor Xu Jun (Zhejiang University), Professor Wang Kefei (Beijing Foreign Studies University) and Professor Ye Xingguo (Shanghai University of International Business and Economics).

        Full-time researchers in ICSA have been engaged in various researches on corpus translation studies, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, contemporary translation theories, corpora-based diplomatic discourse studies,military discourse and translation theory discourse studies, etc. In recent five years, we have awarded 22 research grants, including 1 major project, 2 major subprojects, 1 key project and 3 general projects of National Social Science Fund of China, 4 for Ministry of Education and Shanghai Philosophy and Society Project, 1 major project of China International Publishing Group, 1 for Postdoctoral Foundation Project and 2 for Scientific Research Project of Shanghai Language Commission. We have published 9 academic monographs and more than 50 research papers in SSCI,A&HCI,SCI,EI or CSSCI journals.

        ICSA is the chairing member of both China Association of Corpus Studies and Applications, and Committee for Foreign Languages Discipline Development, China Association for Comparaticve Studies of English and Chinese. We cooperate with Routledge, Springer, China Higher Education Press, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press and other publisherss at home and abroad. The publications we have edited include Frontiers in Applied Linguistics, Corpora and Intercultural Studies, Zhongguo Yuliaoku Yanjiu Qianyan (The Forefront of Chinese Corpus Research).
