Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was founded in December 1949 as the PRC’s first foreign language school and as one of the earliest institutions where China’s higher education in foreign languages took shape. Supervised by the State Education Commission and the Municipality of Shanghai, SISU is a national key university listed under “Project 211” and “Double First-Class Project of China”. I. Requirements and Qualifications

1. Applicants should ensure that they can work as full-time researchers during the stay at the station.

2. Applicants should uphold the Party’s policies, be excellent both in studies and behavior, be honest and upright, have enthusiasm for higher education and have team spirit.

3. Applicants should have fine academic backgrounds, certain experiences in doing academic researches, strong capabilities of teaching and researching, and potentials for future development. (Please refer to more specific policies and regulations implemented by SISU)

4. Applicants should be under the age of 35. The Ph.D. degree should be obtained for less than 3 years (If it is the second time or more for the applicant to work in a postdoctoral station, there is no time limit.).

5. Applicants should have experiences in conducting researches in language data and linguistics, language data and translation studies, language data and smart education, language data and artificial intelligence, discourse studies and other relevant fields, and have good professional publications in core, CSSCI or SSCI journals.

6. Applicants should possess knowledge and skills that are required, and also satisfy other requirements and qualifications required by the position.

SISU encourages Chinese scholars who have obtained Ph.D. degrees in prestigious foreign universities and institutes as well as foreign scholars to work as postdoctoral fellows. The faculty and staff are mainly from colleges, universities and research institutes. Cadres from the Party and government institutions are not allowed to apply for postdoctoral positions.

 

II. Salaries and Benefits

1. Subject postdoctoral fellows enjoy a basic annual salary of more than 180,000 (pre-tax) during their stay at the station, excluding subsidies for over-contract workloads. If they can be selected into the national “Postdoctoral International Exchange Program Introduction Project”, the basic annual salary can reach more than 380,000 (before tax). If they can be selected into the Shanghai “Super Postdoctoral” incentive plan, the basic annual salary can reach more than 330,000 (before tax).

2. Post-doctoral fellows who are qualified or above in the outbound assessment can apply for post-doctorate positions as teachers in the university in the year they leave the station. Among them, those who have obtained the grade of above average can apply to be transferred to teaching and research positions and sign an employment contract if they have passed the assessments of the corresponding colleges (departments, institutes, centers, bases).

3. In accordance with the policy of Shanghai, Shanghai household registration will be provided.

4. The working time during their stay at the station is counted into the working years, and the scientific research results during their stay at the station can be used as the basis for assessing professional and technical positions at the station or after leaving the station.

 

III. Recruitment Procedures

1. Applicants should submit the required materials to the Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications.

2. The Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications refers to the “Implementation Measures for the Ideological and Moral Inspection of Shanghai International Studies University’s Intended Faculty and Staff” (SISU Committee [2020] No. 1), strictly conducts ideological and moral inspections on post-doctoral applicants, and establishes a post-doctoral interview expert review team. Applicants who have passed the preliminary review of the materials will be notified to participate in the station interview to determine post-doctoral candidates.

3. The Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications will submit the list of candidates and materials to the Post-doctoral Management Office.

4. The Post-doctoral Management Office will establish a special working group to review the post-doctoral candidates reported by the Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications and ask for the approval of the school leaders and the Post-doctoral Management Department of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Insurance Bureau.

5. The Post-doctoral Management Office will assist the qualified ones to go through entry procedures.

 

IV. Application Materials

(I) List of Materials

1. “Postdoctoral Application Form”. (Register on http://www.chinapostdoctor.org.cn/, fill in the form, and download it.)

2. Three letters of recommendation from experts in the field required above. (One of the experts should be the doctoral supervisor of the applicant. Please refer to the attachment 1.)

3. CV. (The applicant’s research interests, titles and main contents of the doctoral dissertation, an overview of research progress in the past five years, and family background should be included.)

4. Photocopies of transcripts during doctoral studies with the official seal of the postgraduate office of the university where the applicant graduated.

5. “Research Proposal of Postdoctoral Studies”. (Refer to the attachment 2.)

6. Photocopies of major academic works and certificates of award. (For papers, provide the cover of the journal, the table of contents and the full text; for books, provide the cover, the copyright page and the table of contents.)

7. “Registration Form of Overview of Scientific Research by Postdoctoral Candidates”. (Refer to the attachment 3.)

8. Photocopies of doctorate degree certificate and graduation certificate (Applicants who got doctorate degree abroad or through Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools need to provide the degree certificate issued by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange.) or an original copy of The Result of Oral Defense Form with the official seal of the degree authorization office of the university where the applicant graduated.

9. Double-sided photocopies of the ID card.

10. “Post Doctoral Checklist”. (Download it from http://www.chinapostdoctor.org.cn/ and print it double-sided.)

(i) Doctoral graduates of non-directional employment should have the checklist filled in by the graduate dispatch department or the career center of the university where the applicant got the doctoral graduation certificate and have the checklist stamped with the official seal.

(ii) Applicants of non-personnel (labor) relations (including returned overseas Chinese scholars) should fill in and sign the checklist according to personnel records and have it stamped with the official seal.

(iii) Doctoral graduates of directional commissioned training, in-service staff, active servicemen, armymen transferred to civilian work and demobilized soldiers should check the item “agree to be a full-time postdoctoral” and have the checklist signed by the director of the personnel department or cadre department of the applicant’s employer and stamped with the official seal.

11. Certificate of the applicant’s outside-school ideological and political situation.

(i) Doctoral graduates of non-directional employment should have the certificate issued by the university where the applicant got the doctoral graduation certificate and have the certificate stamped with the official seal.

(ii) Applicants of non-personnel (labor) relations (including returned overseas Chinese scholars) should have the certificate issued by the department of personnel records management where the applicant’s personnel records are kept and have the certificate stamped with the official seal.

(iii) Doctoral graduates of directional commissioned training, in-service staff, active servicemen, armymen transferred to civilian work and demobilized soldiers should check the item “agree to be a full-time postdoctoral” and have the checklist issued by the personnel department or cadre department of the applicant’s employer and stamped with the official seal.

12. Fresh doctoral graduates in China are required to provide the “tripartite agreement on employment of graduates” for the convenience of filing it in personnel records after obtaining the employment registration certificate; in-service staff are required to provide the certificate of not being party or government leaders issued by the applicant’s employer and stamped with the official seal.

13. Physical examination certificate from hospitals evaluated as Class A tertiary or above.
