This talk explores the impact of large language models (LLMs) on translation studies, detailing the evolution and principal attributes of LLMs, and highlighting the substantial opportunities and challenges they present. It examines changes in translation practices and research approaches, highlighting emergent issues like translation ethics, the identity of translators, translation style, and the influence of ideology. The argument is made for a holistic approach to the future of translation studies, emphasizing the necessity of strategies that ensure the field's relevance and advancement.
Speaker Bio
Prof. Hu Kaibao is Professor of Translation Studies and Dean of the Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications at Shanghai International Studies University. He has had more than 20 years of research experience in corpus-based translation studies, published 100 papers in journals indexed in CSSCl, SSCl, A&HCI, and 9 academic monographs in publishers such as Springer and China's Higher Education Press. Prof. Hu is also the investigator of over 13 projects on a national level. In 2017 and 2020, he was admitted into the list of the most influential scholars in the research of philosophy and Social Sciences in China and the distinguished professor of the national major talent plan.
