The Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications (ICSA) held the first meeting discussing the Linguistic Data Science and Applications program for graduate students on April 29th, 2020. In view of the rapid development in artificial intelligence, new liberal arts and digital humanities, the new program is designed for cultivating high-end talents in language data science and applications, with knowledge and skills of both linguistics and computer science in four fields: corpus and linguistic studies, corpus and translation studies, computational linguistics and linguistic intelligence.
The online meeting focused on the aim, curriculum design and course description of the program. Professor Hu Kaibao, Director of ICSA, first gave a brief introduction to the latest development of linguistic data science and applications at home and abroad, and then made a report of “The Curriculum of Linguistic Data Science and Applications Program”. Professor Hu Jiasheng from Shanghai Foreign Language Audiovisual Publishing House, Professor Shi Jianjun from SISU Institute of Linguistics, Professor Mao Wenwei from SISU Office of Research Affairs and Professor Tan Yesheng from the Editorial Office of Journal of Foreign Languages attended the meeting and put forth their constructive suggestions for the program. All staff members of ICSA were also present at the meeting and offered their ideas.
Professor Hu Kaibao then concluded the meeting and announced plans for the follow-up work. ICSA will invite scholars and experts of computer science from the academia and different research institutes for further discussion about the program in the near future.
